Baby steps

Tonight Emma is staying the night with Mamo (my mom) and of course I've got mommy anxiety. She went to daycare at Summer's place for the first time earlier this week too. A lot of baby steps in one week and she is doing amazing...my little lady, baby orangutan. :)

Baby Leg Warmers: The Next Frontier

I have been researching baby leg warmers on the internet and realized that not only are they completely adorable, but a convenience, as well. I cut up a pair of my knee high toe socks to see how they would fit on Emma, and they were perfect! Instead of paying at lease $12 for a pair of baby leg warmers online (unless you find the clearance ones on Amazon for anywhere from $2.00), why not make your own? Using knee high socks of any fun pattern, you cut the feet out, and you are left with a long warmer with an elastic top to adjust to your baby's legs. You can hem the bottoms to fit, add some lace, or leave them adjustable to grow with your baby!

Another fun option is to make your own! I am always one for crafting and love to crochet. Below is a pattern I found online that gives you the foundation for basic cute baby leg warmers. Use these to start and then make them your own...add ruffles, bows, buttons, flowers...anything you can dream of to make a unique item for your baby. They will keep your baby's legs warm while keeping the diaper accessible for easy changing.

Away We Go!

Finally being released to go home was a learning experience. The baby had to be released by her doctor, I had to be released by the general doctor and my obstetrician, and speak to the billing department. Talk about a circus!

Say cheese!
My husband and I joked that my obstetrician was like the John Wayne of OBs, he was the Dos Equis man...he was the guy that showed up to check my cervix in a leather bomber jacket and slacks. He rolled up his jacket sleeves, put on the hospital gloves, and was quick and straight to the point. When he held our four day old newborn, I went to take a picture, he said look at the camera and she did!

After finally getting the car loaded, the nurse walked us out of the hospital and we buckled Emma in for her first car ride. I wasn't sure how she would react to being in her car seat for the first time, and dealing with the movement of the vehicle. I had never noticed how many bumps and potholes there were on the highway and roads home until we had driven in the car with our newborn for the first time. She did surprisingly well! In fact, she had her first smile that day in the car ride.

Gadgets Galore

2011 is upon us and I am looking into becoming a high-tech mommy. I have been looking into upgrading to a tablet or reader of some sort. I know that there is a difference between the two, but I think the shades of gray in between are making the decision difficult. The NookColor seems to be the bandwagon I am jumping on.

The logic:

The Kindle seems to be a great e-reader, but that's pretty much all it is, a reader.

The iPad has been most recommended to be but in all honesty, as complex as it is, it might as well be a laptop. It's smaller but it costs the same amount and with a lot less memory. I am looking to consolidate my gadgets by having as many things in one location as possible. My music, photographs, digital movies, internet capability, and e-reader need one home if possible...which translates to increased memory. The iPad is $499 for 16 GB, which to me is somewhat silly when I can get a laptop at Best Buy with 250 GB of memory and wireless capability for that same price. Is the memory loss (not senility but technically speaking) worth the ease of mobility?

Looking at the NookColor it comes with 8 GB of memory, but the ability to use micro SD cards which can carry 32 GB. Online you can find those for as low as $50. For a NookColor with 40 GB (8 GB internal + 32 GB external) we are looking at around $299. The 32 GB iPad is currently priced at around $599. The price difference alone would allow me to buy two NookColors with the micro SD 32 GB card. One for me, one for my husband.

Another handy feature that I appreciate (unsure if it's on the iPad) is the read to be feature. It will read the illustrated children's books to the children if they choose that option in the menu. I can see this as a definite reward for Emma while in the car. I would much prefer she read in the car as opposed to watch movies or sit their restlessly.

After handling the NookColor and the iPad, I have found that for my short round hands the NookColor is slightly smaller and therefore easier for me to interface with as a hand-held device.

Always open to ideas, questions, and suggestions. :)

First Days Tornado

Shortly after having the c-section the pain medicine kicked in and the hour in the recovery room flew by as I was floating millions of miles above the hospital. They eventually wheeled me into my room and sleep was banging down my door. The nurse felt that this was the appropriate time to give me Skyridge Hospital 101 but all I wanted was sleep. She eventually left and that is when the medicine really kicked in. According to my husband I did awaken throughout the night to feed Emma, but I have no recollection of it. He was amazing during the five days we spent in the hospital since I was on a movement restriction.
Unable to move around too much was extremely difficult for me after a few days because I am always a bundle of energy (even after a c-section). Having a very large family, including friends of the family, meant that we had constant visitors despite what the infant classes advised. Luckily, I had an amazing nurse Janet who could read me like a book (not that it is very difficult) and she was quick to make people leave temporarily while she "checked my vitals". I considered her my right hand man while I was in the hospital. Step 1 to maintaining your sanity while in the hospital: Having a hospital staff member vested in you.

Beginning the Chaos

Two and a half months ago Emma was brought into the world. After twenty-four hours of labor, she was delivered via c-section. Becoming a parent is a unique experience to each individual. As humans, this is a moment of self redefinition. Before we viewed the world in terms of ourselves, very ego centric. As soon as that child emerges we now define ourselves in terms of that beautiful baby. We are now parents to that child: mother/father. We must begin taking care of something other than ourselves. This blog is to document the wonderful chaos that ensues becoming a parent and redefining myself.

On a side note, redefinition does not necessarily entail losing the me prior to childbirth. Instead, this is an enhancement to the person I was before.
